Immigrants in Joensuu are assisted in many ways. On this page you will find a number of authorities, associations and other organisations that advise and assist immigrants in various matters.

1. Joensuu Immigration Services

Joensuu Immigration Services provides information on all of the services provided by the City and guidance in using the services. The services provided by the City of Joensuu include day care for children, basic education, housing, social and health care services and leisure services. Furthermore, the service point of Joensuu Immigration Services provides information on opportunities to study Finnish as well as housing, work and other sources of income, and leisure. The service is confidential and free of charge.

The service staff will order an interpreter if necessary. The interpreting services are free of charge.

2. The North Karelia Employment and Economic Development Office, Joensuu Office

The Employment and Economic Development Office (Työ- ja elinkeinotoimisto) or TE Office provides information on integration training and other training opportunities that may help you to find a job. The TE Office also provides help in job hunting and information on job vacancies.

The Integration Services staff speaks Finnish, Swedish and English. For other languages, you can use an interpreter.

You must make an appointment in advance for the Integration Services of the TE Office.

You can also email or call the National Telephone Service Jobline, which serves in Finnish, Swedish, English and Russian.

You can join civic activities through JoMoni, the Joensuu District Multicultural Association. JoMoni organises sports activities, language courses, clubs and cultural activities. The activities are open to everyone.

Initial assessment and integration plan

You can have a personal initial assessment and/or an integration plan drawn up.

In Joensuu, an initial assessment and integration plan are drafted at either the Joensuu Office of the North Karelia Employment and Economic Development Office or at the Joensuu Immigrant Services.

You may ask for an initial assessment yourself.

Do you need an interpreter?

You can use an interpreter if you do not speak Finnish or Swedish and you need to deal with the Finnish authorities. The authorities in Joensuu will book you an interpreter if you have notified them of the need for one in advance. In such a case, interpreting services are free of charge.

If you book and pay for an interpreter yourself, you can use an interpreter whenever you want.

The City of Joensuu orders interpretation services from a contract supplier.

The Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters (SKTL) offers an online search engine which you can use to search for interpreters and translators.

A register of authorised/official translators can be found on the website of the Finnish National Board of Education.
